Thermostats: Selection, Wiring and Honest Settings Advice

A thermostat is a switch with opinions. The right one, wired correctly and set sensibly for a humid climate, disappears into the background. The wrong one runs your backup heat all winter without telling you.

Thermostat problems come to us wearing other disguises: a heating bill that tripled, a system that short cycles, a heat pump that blows lukewarm air. The device itself is cheap compared to what a miswired or misconfigured one costs over a season, which is why we treat a thermostat swap as real work rather than an accessory sale.

The heat pump wiring trap

Almost every home here heats with a heat pump, and heat pump thermostats carry extra wiring for the reversing valve and the auxiliary heat strips. Land those wires wrong, or configure the thermostat for the wrong equipment type, and the system quietly runs electric strip heat when the heat pump alone would do. Nothing feels broken. The house is warm. Then the winter bill arrives at several times the expected number, because strip heat costs a multiple of heat pump heat per degree.

This is the single most common fault we find behind a DIY thermostat install, and it is why heat pump owners in particular should have the configuration verified even if the swap itself went smoothly.

Settings advice written for Florida

Most published thermostat advice was written for dry northern climates and travels badly. Deep overnight setbacks save real money in Ohio; here, letting the house warm up also lets humidity climb, and the system spends the savings pulling that moisture back out. Modest setbacks of two to four degrees are the honest recommendation for an occupied Tampa Bay home.

Fan set to auto, not on. Running the fan continuously re-evaporates the moisture sitting on the coil and blows it back into the house, which raises indoor humidity. It is the most common well-intentioned setting we correct.

And 72 versus 78 is not a moral question. Every degree of setpoint is worth several percent on the cooling bill, so pick the warmest temperature the household is comfortable at and let ceiling fans, which cool people rather than rooms, buy you a degree or two more.

Which thermostat to buy

A basic programmable model serves a household with a steady routine perfectly well. When the thermostat is the actual fault

A blank display, a system that ignores its schedule, cooling that runs past the setpoint: the thermostat earns suspicion in all three, and sometimes it is guilty. Just as often the real culprit is a tripped condensate float switch cutting power, a transformer issue, or a low battery producing intermittent nonsense. What temperature should I set my AC to in Florida?

The warmest setting the household is actually comfortable at, because each degree is worth several percent on the bill. There is no magic number. What matters more is avoiding deep setbacks that let humidity climb, and keeping the fan on auto rather than on.

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air when the heat is on?

Heat pump supply air runs around 90 to 100 degrees, which is warmer than the room but cooler than your skin, so it can feel cool from a register. That is normal. Aux heat announcing itself constantly, or a house that cannot reach setpoint, is not, and both are worth a visit.

Are smart thermostats compatible with every system?

No. Heat pumps with auxiliary heat, multi-stage equipment and communicating variable-speed systems each narrow the compatible list, and some need a common wire the existing cable does not carry. Checking compatibility before purchase beats discovering it mid-install.

Can a thermostat cause short cycling?

Yes. A thermostat mounted where supply air washes over it satisfies almost immediately and shuts the system down in minutes, over and over. Relocating it, or correcting a faulty anticipator setting, fixes what looks like an equipment problem.
