Why Your AC Runs All Day, and When That Is a Problem

An air conditioner that runs all day on an August afternoon in Tampa Bay is usually doing exactly what it should. Run time is how moisture leaves the house, and modern variable-speed equipment is built to run nearly nonstop at low output on purpose. Runtime is the wrong thing to watch. Whether the house is holding is the right thing.

The four o'clock test

Note two numbers at about 4 pm on a hot afternoon: the setpoint and the actual indoor temperature on the same thermostat screen. That one comparison tells you nearly everything.

Holding within a degree or two of setpoint while the system runs without a break means it is winning a fight it was built for. Peak hours of a Tampa Bay August sit right at the edge of what any correctly sized system is meant to handle, and holding steady through them takes sustained output. Constant running in that situation is effort, not failure.

Losing ground looks different. Out at the condenser the compressor runs flat out, indoors the reading climbs past setpoint through the afternoon, and the house does not recover until after sunset. That is a symptom, and the list of causes behind it is short.

Four o'clock is the right hour because indoor load peaks later than the outdoor thermometer does. Your attic soaks up heat all day and re-radiates it down through the ceiling into the evening, so a house that held fine at noon can start slipping at five. Test at the hard hour, not the easy one.

Long runtimes are the design, not a defect

Cooling equipment is sized to hold setpoint on a design-day afternoon, which for this area means the low 90s, not the one brutal week each summer that beats it. A system with enough spare capacity to shrug off the worst afternoon of the year would be badly oversized for the other eleven months, and oversizing carries a penalty of its own, covered below.

That design choice is deliberate, and it is the right one. Sizing for the outlier would mean buying a machine that spends all of April, May, October and November cycling on and off in short bursts, doing a worse job on humidity in exchange for headroom you need about six afternoons a year. Equipment engineers made that trade on purpose, and the fact that your system works hard in August is evidence the trade was made correctly rather than evidence something is wrong.

Run time also does a second job. Moisture leaves your air only while damp air is moving across a cold coil, so one long steady cycle pulls far more water out of the house than a series of short blasts that reach the same temperature. Variable-speed systems take this to its logical end and run almost continuously at reduced output by design. If you own one, all-day operation is not a warning sign. It is the feature you paid for.

Losing ground has a short list of causes

Slipping past setpoint on the kind of day the system used to handle points at one of five things. Work through them in order. And if the system is running but producing barely cool air at all, that is a different failure; start with the not-cooling checklist instead.

  • A dirty filter. Free to check. Hold it up to a light, and if you cannot see through it, replace it.
  • A dirty condenser coil. Grass clippings, dryer lint and oak debris pack the outdoor fins, and the system loses its ability to reject heat at the exact hour it needs every bit of it. Kill power at the breaker and rinse the coil with a garden hose. Hose pressure only: a pressure washer folds the fins flat and makes the airflow problem permanent.
  • Low refrigerant. Refrigerant does not get used up. Low means a leak, and a leak means finding and repairing it rather than paying for a top-up every June.
  • Return duct leakage. Gaps on the return side pull attic air at 120 degrees and up straight into the system, which then fights that added load all afternoon. Duct testing and sealing is the repair.
  • A system that was never sized right. If the house has lost ground on every hot afternoon since the equipment went in, suspect the original load calculation rather than anything that broke.

The paradox of the system that never runs long

A system that cools the house in eight-minute bursts sounds powerful and lives badly. Short cycles satisfy the thermostat before the coil has been cold long enough to condense much water, so the house arrives at temperature still carrying its moisture. Cold and clammy at once. Owners respond by lowering the setpoint, which shortens the cycles further, and the humidity problem they are chasing gets worse with every press of the down arrow. An air conditioner running long, steady cycles on a hot day is healthier than one that never has to try.

Short cycling costs equipment life as well as comfort. Compressors draw their heaviest current in the first seconds of a start, so a machine that starts and stops six times an hour spends far more of its life in the hardest part of its duty cycle than one that starts twice and runs. Long runtimes look alarming on a utility bill and read as strain to most owners, but the machine is under less stress holding a steady load than it is slamming on and off all afternoon.

When to stop watching and call

Losing ground on its own justifies a service visit. Losing ground plus any of the following means switch the system off now:

  • Ice anywhere on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil. Running it frozen risks pushing liquid refrigerant into the compressor, the most expensive part on the machine.
  • A breaker that trips a second time after one reset
  • Burning or electrical smells
  • The outdoor unit humming while its fan stands still, which points to a failed capacitor or a motor about to seize

Each of those is the kind of fault that turns a repair into a replacement when the system keeps running through it. Shut it down and book an AC repair visit.

And if the thermostat is holding setpoint through a 95-degree afternoon while the system runs every minute of it, leave it alone. It is passing the hardest test a Florida summer offers, at the exact hour the test is hardest.
