A broken air conditioner announces itself. Faulty ones do not. They hold the house at 76, nobody complains, and month after month they draw more power than they should because some component failed partway instead of completely. This article is about those faults specifically: the ones you cannot see, what each one does to your bill, and how a technician actually finds them. Duct leakage into a 130 degree attic
Start here, because it is usually the largest single number and almost nobody has ever laid eyes on their own ductwork.
Florida duct systems run through attics that reach 120 to 130 degrees on a summer afternoon. Any supply duct with a failed seam is dumping air you already paid to cool directly into the hottest space in your house. That is bad. Return-side leaks are worse, because the blower is now actively pulling 130 degree attic air into the system and mixing it with your return air, so the equipment is fighting a load you created yourself. Older flex duct fails at the collars, at the boot connections and wherever a previous trade stepped on it.
Symptoms: long runtimes with no obvious cause, rooms furthest from the air handler that never quite get there, and a system that feels undersized despite being sized correctly on paper.
Diagnosis: pressure testing, not guessing. A duct blaster pressurizes the system and measures actual leakage. Sealing what the test finds is generally the efficiency work that returns most available on an older Tampa Bay house.
A fouled condenser coil, which nobody looks at
The outdoor coil's entire job is rejecting the heat your house dumped into the refrigerant. Coat its fins with grass clippings, dryer lint, dust and salt aerosol, and heat stops leaving. Head pressure climbs. The compressor now works considerably harder against that raised pressure for exactly the same amount of cooling delivered indoors.
Fouling happens gradually, over two or three seasons, so there is never a day when performance visibly falls off a cliff. Near the water, salt accelerates it and adds corrosion on top, which is why coastal homes want service twice a year rather than annually.
Diagnosis: measured, never eyeballed. Suction and liquid line pressures, plus the temperature difference across the condenser. High head pressure on a correct charge points straight at the coil.
The evaporator coil indoors fails the same way from the opposite direction, absorbing heat poorly instead of rejecting it poorly. That one is behind a sealed panel, so it goes unseen even longer.
A weak capacitor and a compressor pulling high amps
This is the fault homeowners never suspect, because the system is still cooling.
Run capacitors store and release the charge that keeps compressor and fan motors turning efficiently, and they degrade long before they fail outright. Picture a part rated at 45 microfarads testing at 32. Still starts the motor. Every time, in fact, so nothing looks wrong from the hallway, while the motor pulls more current to do identical work and runs hotter doing it, and heat is what eventually kills compressors. You end up paying twice: once on the monthly bill, and again in equipment life you will never get back.
Diagnosis: a capacitance meter reads the real value against the nameplate rating, and a clamp meter compares running amperage to rated load amps. Two minutes of work. Ordinary parts of any competent maintenance visit, and neither is anything you could see or hear from inside the house.
Related symptoms worth reporting: a hum before the unit starts, a compressor that hesitates, or lights that dim briefly at startup.
Slow refrigerant loss, running undercharged all season
Sealed systems do not consume refrigerant. Ever. If yours is low, it leaked, and a slow leak produces a system that is undercharged for months without ever getting cold enough to trigger an obvious failure.
Undercharged operation costs money in a specific way. Capacity falls, so runtime climbs to compensate, and meanwhile the compressor runs hotter than it was designed to because it relies on returning refrigerant vapor to cool itself. Top it up without locating the leak and you buy the same refrigerant twice. With R-410A being phased down, that gets to be a worse bet every year. Two control faults with outsized bills
Both of these are invisible in the sense that the house still reaches its setpoint.
- The fan left on ON. After the compressor stops, the evaporator coil is soaking wet with the water it just condensed out of your air. Keep the blower running and it pushes house air across that wet coil, re-evaporating the moisture straight back into your rooms. You paid to remove it. You are now paying again to remove it a second time, and the house feels humid at a setpoint that should feel fine.
- Reversing valves that stick or leak internally. This one is specific to heat pumps and genuinely sneaky. A partially failed valve lets hot and cold refrigerant bleed between circuits, so the system delivers reduced capacity in both modes while running normally. The homeowner sees a system that runs constantly. The technician sees it immediately in the line temperatures. See heat pumps.
Getting all of it looked at once
Every fault above is either caught or prevented by an inspection where somebody actually takes readings, rather than glancing at the unit and changing a filter. Ask what was measured. Visits that produce no numbers have not diagnosed anything.
