Compressor Failed: Repair It or Replace the System?

Two cases are easy. On a system under 8 years old with the compressor still under manufacturer warranty, replace the compressor. Past 12 years, put that money toward a new system instead. Everything hard lives in the stretch between, and three questions settle it: what the warranty actually pays for, what killed the compressor, and which refrigerant the system runs.

Nobody walks you through those questions on a sales visit. A dead compressor is the single best moment to sell a full system, and plenty of quotes are written accordingly. Work the questions yourself and the answer tends to surface on its own.

Age settles the easy cases first

The bands come from the same math on repairing versus replacing we apply to any major failure. Under 8 Florida years, the equipment has most of its life ahead of it, so a new compressor rides on coils, motors and bearings that are not yet tired. Past 12, the picture inverts. You would be installing the most expensive repair in residential air conditioning into a machine whose every other component is the same age as the part that just died, and the second failure that follows a year or two later erases whatever the repair saved.

Between 8 and 12, age stops deciding. The questions take over.

Question one: what the warranty pays for

Registered equipment commonly carries a ten-year parts warranty covering the compressor, so in the middle band the part itself is frequently still covered. Covered is not free.

A warranty ships you a compressor. It does not pay anyone to recover the refrigerant, cut the old compressor out, braze the new one in, pull a vacuum, and weigh in a fresh charge, and it does not pay for the refrigerant itself. On a compressor job, labor and refrigerant are most of the bill. A covered part shrinks the number without making it small, which is why "the part is under warranty" and "the repair is cheap" are two different sentences.

Check registration before deciding anything. Manufacturers cut the coverage period sharply on equipment that was never registered, and homeowners discover this at the worst possible moment. Two minutes with the serial number answers it.

Question two: what killed it

Compressors rarely die of old age. They get murdered, and the weapon is nearly always electrical, airflow or refrigerant.

A weakening run capacitor makes the compressor strain through every start until the windings give out, which is why a cheap part sits behind so many summer breakdowns. A slow refrigerant leak leaves it running undercharged and hot for months. Blocked airflow, a filthy condenser coil, chronic overheating: same ending, longer route.

This matters because the conditions that killed the old compressor will kill the new one. Installing a fresh compressor into the system that murdered the last one is a repeat purchase on a schedule. So a quote that does not name the cause of death is not a diagnosis. It is a price. Ask what killed it, and if the answer is a shrug, get a second diagnostic before anyone opens the sealed system. Amp draw, charge and airflow readings take real time, and they are exactly what separates an answer from a guess.

Question three: the refrigerant bet

Every compressor replacement on an R-410A system is a bet. The bet is that the machine has enough life left to pay the repair back, and the odds move against you every year. R-410A equipment stopped being manufactured on January 1, 2025, and the refrigerant itself is being phased down. Servicing an existing R-410A system remains fully legal, and a healthy one is worth keeping. Opening the sealed system on one is a different act: you are buying refrigerant on a declining supply curve to fund years the machine still has to actually deliver.

At seven years, that bet is fine. At eleven, with a second problem already on the service record, it is not, and the money belongs in a replacement that starts the clock over on the current refrigerant generation.

The hard-start kit is a bridge, not a repair

Somewhere in this conversation, someone will offer a hard-start kit. It gives a struggling compressor a stronger electrical shove at startup, and on a compressor that is mechanically tight and drawing high amps at start, it can buy a season. Sometimes more. What it cannot do is reverse wear.

Used the right way, it is a bridge: the house stays cool while you plan a replacement on your own schedule instead of the equipment's. Used as a sales tool, it closes a small ticket in July and sets up a large one in October. Ask which of the two you are being sold. Ask, too, what the plan is for when the bridge runs out, because a bridge with no far bank is just a delay you paid for.

Putting the three answers together

  • Part covered, cause named and fixable, system on the younger side of the band: replace the compressor and fix what killed it in the same visit, or the warranty replacement dies the same death.
  • No named cause: stop. The quote is missing its diagnosis.
  • Past 12 years, or a second major failure inside two summers: replacement wins on total cost across the next five years, even against a covered part, because labor and refrigerant on the repair buy you the oldest years the machine has left.

One last piece. A failed compressor forces the timing, and timing is what pushes people into repairs they would not choose with a week to think. If the failure arrived before the budget did, financing exists precisely to break that link, so the machine's schedule stops dictating the decision. Answer the three questions first. The compressor already made its choice; the system does not get to make yours.
