AC Smells Decoded: Musty, Burning, and Chemical

Three AC smells matter, and they rank cleanly. Burning or electrical means walk to the breaker and shut the system off now. Chemical, or something faintly sweet, points at a refrigerant leak. Musty is the Florida default, a film of biological growth on the indoor coil, and it is the one you can safely finish your coffee before addressing. Burning means off, now

Hot plastic, scorched dust that lingers past the first minute of runtime, or the sharp ozone bite of arcing all come from the same short list: an overheating motor, a failing blower belt on older air handlers, or wiring gone loose at a terminal. None of those improve with run time. Every additional cycle heats the same failing part.

Do not run it to see whether the smell clears. That experiment costs a motor at best and risks a fire at worst, because heat cycling works electrical connections loose over years, and a loose terminal under load is how air handler fires start. Kill the breaker, then call. This is the situation emergency AC repair exists for.

One exception is worth knowing. A brief dusty burning smell the first time heat runs in December is settled dust cooking off the heat strips, and it fades within the hour. If it lingers past the first cycle or two, or smells like hot plastic or electrical burning rather than dust, shut the heat off at the thermostat and kill the breaker, then call. Same if it sets off a smoke alarm or you see smoke. A dust smell that comes back mid-season is not dust.

Chemical or faintly sweet points at refrigerant

Refrigerant carries a mild odor people describe as chemical, vaguely sweet, or like nail polish remover across the room. Paired with cooling that has been slipping for weeks, it points at a leak, and a leak never heals, because a sealed system does not consume refrigerant in normal operation.

Newer equipment tells on itself. Systems built for R-454B, the refrigerant most new machines now run, frequently include leak sensors that shut the blower down or run it to clear the air when one trips. An older R-410A system has no such sensor, so your nose and your power bill are the only instruments watching.

Finding and repairing the leak is the work. Topping up the charge without that step vents the gas into your yard and repeats the failure in a few months.

Musty is the Florida default

Dirty socks, wet cardboard, a beach towel forgotten in the car. When the smell arrives with the first blast of air from the vents and fades as the system runs, the source is nearly always the evaporator coil. That coil sits cold and wet for eight months a year here, in a stream of humid air delivering dust and skin cells, which makes it a fed and watered petri dish. Biofilm builds on the fins and in the condensate pan below them, and the airstream carries the result to every room in the house.

Heat pump owners get a specific variant. "Dirty sock syndrome" shows up in heating mode, when a coil that grew biofilm all summer warms up and releases the smell in one concentrated wave. Same organism, different trigger, same fix.

A musty smell strongest in one room, or one that persists with the system off, is a different animal. That pattern points at moisture in the building rather than on the coil, and it deserves a look at the ductwork and the room itself.

What fixes musty, and what merely gets sold

The fix follows the cause. Clean the coil, clear and treat the condensate drain and pan, and bring indoor humidity down so the growth stops being fed. What gets sold instead is duct cleaning. The smell lives on the coil and in the pan, not in the ducts, and scrubbing ductwork upstream of a fouled coil changes nothing about next week's smell. Routine duct cleaning is rarely justified in an ordinary home, and a company reaching for it before looking at your coil has told you something about the company.

Exhaust and gas, for the minority with a furnace

Most Tampa Bay homes heat with a heat pump or electric strips, but gas furnaces exist here. Rotten egg smell means leave the house and call the gas utility from outside; the odorant was added to be unmissable, and it worked. Exhaust smells near a gas furnace mean shut it down and have the venting inspected, because carbon monoxide itself has no smell at all, and the odors you can detect are the only warning you get.

The smell is data

Nearly every smell on this list is diagnosable in one visit, and what shortens that visit is precision on the phone. Burning plastic or hot dust? Constant, or only at start-up? Stronger at one vent or all of them? Cooling or heating mode? Those four answers separate a coil cleaning from an electrical fault before the truck leaves the shop.

Describe it precisely, keep the system off if anything smelled hot, and let the smell do its one useful job: telling you where to look.
