AC Replacement in Tampa Bay

Somewhere between year ten and year fifteen, most Tampa Bay air conditioners stop being worth fixing. This page is about spotting that point before a July breakdown decides for you, and what a replacement done properly includes.

When replacement beats repair

Age is the first filter. Under eight years, repair wins nearly every time: the equipment has most of its life ahead, parts are easy to get, and the failures at that age are usually small ones. The refrigerant has already decided for some systems

Manufacture of new R-410A residential equipment ended January 1, 2025. The refrigerant itself stays on the market to service what is already installed, but its price climbs as the phase-down tightens supply. That shifts the math on older systems: any repair that opens the sealed circuit, a coil leak above all, costs more on R-410A every year.

New systems ship on R-454B, or R-32 from a few brands. Replacing now puts you on the refrigerant the next fifteen years of service will be built around instead of the one being wound down.

What moves the price

We never quote a dollar figure sight unseen, because the honest number depends on the house. Four things move it:

Equipment tier

Single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed. The tiers differ in humidity control and running cost, and the right one depends on your usage, not on the top of the catalog.

Ductwork condition

Leaky or undersized ducts choke a new system exactly as they choked the old one. Sometimes sealing belongs in the scope; sometimes it lets you buy a smaller machine.

Electrical work

Circuit, breaker and disconnect have to meet current code. Usually minor. Occasionally not.

Permit and inspection

Every replacement carries a mechanical permit and a county final inspection, and they belong in the price rather than appearing later.

Why a straight swap of the same equipment is usually wrong

The tempting shortcut is to match whatever sits on the pad now. That repeats every mistake the last installer made. A large share of the systems we replace were oversized from day one, which in this climate means short cycles and a clammy house, and copying the tonnage carries that problem forward.

So a replacement quote here starts with a Manual J load calculation on the house as it stands today, plus a duct evaluation, because static pressure the blower cannot overcome erases whatever efficiency you paid for. What a proper changeout includes

A changeout is more than a swap of boxes. The old refrigerant comes out by legal recovery, never vented. Indoor coil and outdoor unit go in together as a matched pair, since the SEER2 rating belongs to the pair rather than either half. Dry nitrogen flows through the copper while joints are brazed, the circuit is evacuated to a verified vacuum, and the charge goes in by weight against the nameplate instead of by feel at the gauges.

Permits, the license and the old unit

A replacement in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco or Hernando runs under a mechanical permit and closes with a county final inspection. The old equipment leaves with us the same day, refrigerant recovered and unit hauled for scrap, with nothing left at the curb.

Common questions

Is it worth replacing a 10-year-old AC?

It depends on what failed. At ten Florida years, a capacitor, a fan motor or a drain problem is still a repair. A failed compressor or a leaking evaporator coil is the other case: the fix costs a large fraction of a new system and buys the oldest years the machine has left. We quote both and tell you which one we would pick.

Can I replace just the outdoor unit?

No, outside of rare warranty situations. SEER2 ratings are earned by the indoor coil and outdoor unit together, as a matched pair, and mixing generations gives up capacity, efficiency and usually the manufacturer warranty. The refrigerant transition closes the door anyway: a new R-454B outdoor unit will not run on an R-410A coil.

How long does an AC replacement take?

One day for most changeouts: old equipment out in the morning, the new system set, charged and checked out before evening. What stretches it to two is work beyond the equipment itself, duct corrections, a relocated air handler, panel or circuit upgrades. Whichever applies to your house is stated in the written quote.

Do you take the old unit?

Yes. The refrigerant is recovered legally before anything moves, by EPA-certified technicians, and the old condenser, air handler and packaging leave on our truck the day of the job. Nothing sits at the curb waiting for a bulk pickup.

Should I repair it one more time instead?

Sometimes, yes. On a system under eight years old, or for a failed wear part at any age, one more repair is usually the right money. The trap is the third repair in two summers on a twelve-year-old machine, where each fix buys less than it costs.
